TRESE: nominated for the Madrigal-Gonzalez Award

UP ICW ANNOUNCES BEST FIRST BOOK NOMINEES FOR 2009
by Arvin Abejo Mangohig

The UP Institute of Creative Writing and the Madrigal-Gonzalez family are pleased to announce the nominees for the Madrigal-Gonzalez Best First Book Award for 2009. The nominees are: The Proxy Eros by Mookie Katigbak, Stories From Another Time by Benjamin Bautista, Antisipasyon by Victor Dennis T. Nierva , The El Bimbo Variations by Adam David , Girl Trouble by Alan Navarra, Trese: Murder on Balete Drive by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo, I Hate My Mother by Perpilili Vivienne Tiongson and Playing It Safe by Gerry T. Los BaƱos.

This year's selection mirrors the changing landscape of Philippine literature as it includes the bestselling graphic novel Trese, a collaboration between Tan and Baldisimo—a possibly controversial inclusion among purist circles.

TRESE 3000

3000 copies.

It’s not exactly enough to be considered a national best-seller, but it’s a big deal to me (and Kajo) since it’s the first time we’ve ever done anything that sold more than 500 copies.

It was such a big surprise when Nida, our publisher, told me that TRESE Book 1 had already sold 3,000 and is now on its second printing. (And Book 2 has already sold 1,000 copies.)

Thanks to all the comic book store owners, book store managers, and most especially to all readers.

Me and Kajo are still working on Book 3. It’s a bit delayed, we know, but we just want to make sure you have as much fun (and feel as much fear) when you read Case #9 to 13. We hope it’ll be worth the wait.

For the ones who are still trying to hunt down for their own copy of TRESE, it is now available in the following stores:

Best Sellers
Comic Odyssey
Comic Quest
Fully Booked
National Bookstore
Pandayan Bookstore
Powerbooks

If your local branch or favorite bookstore/comic book shop doesn't have copies, just go to their customer service counter and give them the following information:

1
TRESE: MURDER ON BALETE DRIVE
Published by Visprint
Authors: Budjette Tan & KaJo Baldisimo
ISBN: 971-92574-7-4

2
TRESE: UNREPORTED MURDERS
Published by Visprint
Authors: Budjette Tan & KaJo Baldisimo
ISBN: 971-92574-9-0

Tell the bookstore that they can reach Visprint via:
http://visprintpub.blogspot.com/
book_inquiry (@) visprint.net

Hope this makes it easier for you to find copies of TRESE.

Many thanks!

TRESE (The Inquirer Review)

Spook Out Sister By Ruel S. De Vera / Philippine Daily Inquirer
READ THE COMPLETE REVIEW AT: http://showbizandstyle.inquirer.net/you/expressions/view/20080425-132699/Spook-Out-Sister

“My name is Alexandra Trese. I am nothing like my father.” Her father Anton dabbled in affairs mystical and mysterious; she—called “Little Trese” fondly and otherwise—has inherited his gift for the eerily unorthodox, with a difference. It is to her that Manila’s police turn when a crime scene confounds them, because there is no one like Alexandra Trese.

Stepping resolutely apart from the crowd of the commonplace, “Trese: Murder on Balete Drive” by Budjette Tan and KaJo Baldisimo (Visual Print Enterprises, Pasay City, 2008, 100 pages) is a graphic novel that stands apart from what has come before.

....

Tan provides a suitably street-level feel to the dark happenings, producing plots that feel like Warren Ellis’ Planetary, Mike Mignola’s Hellboy and Chris Carter’s The X-Files all melded together and contained in a fully realized Metro Manila avatar. “That will be the least of your problems,” the fascinating Alexandra Trese barks. “As the universe seeks balance, so does the underworld.” Full of sharp characterization and suspenseful revelations, “Trese” is clearly Tan’s best work, a transcendent product of modern spookiness.

There are some creations that really are better in black-and-white, and “Trese” is one of them. Baldisimo’s moody art, full of negative space, speed lines, a black grid and sharp angles, enthralls the reader.

.....

The elements present in the fortuneteller’s brew that is “Trese” are not new, but the seamless communion of Tan and Baldisimo’s talents imbues “Murder” with a palpable energy. Every few years, a completed Filipino-crafted graphic novel emerges from the mist to take its place among the work of greats such as Mars Ravelo and the Redondo brothers: Gerry Alanguilan’s “Wasted,” Arnold Arre’s “The Mythology Class” and Carlo Vergara’s “Ang Kagila-gilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni Zsazsa Zaturnnah,” in particular.

With a subtle glint of eldritch metal and a mystery woman’s steely relentlessness, “Trese: Murder on Balete Drive” by Budjette Tan and KaJo Baldisimo joins that potent pantheon, something that emerged burning brilliantly from the shadowy streets we assumed we knew so well.

Hunting TRESE

Last Wednesday, my friend texted that she got a copy of TRESE at National Bookstore, Greenbelt. I went there Thursday and it was already sold out. :-)

I asked the lady at Customer Service if she could check the nearest branch. So, she called up Glorietta and they were already sold out as well.

It might take them a week before they could restock again.

Visprint is in the process of delivering to the other stores, as well as stores outside of Metro Manila.

UPDATE (April 29) : Comic Quest and Comic Odyssey already have copies of TRESE. In case they've run out, just tell them to order a copy for you.

If it will be more convenient for you to go to a branch of National Bookstore, Powerbooks, Fully Booked, and Pandayan Bookstore, then I highly suggest that you call them up / email them and ask them to reserve a copy for you.

Below are the contact info of the said bookstores:
